The Monetization Layer for AI: Our Series A Investment in Koah

AI applications are becoming a place where people make decisions. They compare products, work through tradeoffs, and ask follow-up questions until they know what to do. For the companies building those experiences, every conversation also carries a cost. Serving more users requires a business model that can grow with usage.

We’re excited to lead Koah’s $20.5 million Series A, with participation from Forerunner and South Park Commons. Koah is building advertising infrastructure for AI applications: a way for developers to earn revenue from useful, contextual placements inside the experiences they are creating.

A new interface needs new advertising

Advertising has helped fund broad access to each major information interface, from television to the web and mobile. AI creates another such opportunity, but the product needs to fit how people use it. A conversation contains an evolving set of needs, constraints, and preferences. An advertising system has to interpret that context as it changes.

Koah uses the meaning of the conversation to match an advertiser with the decision a person is making. Its formats include sponsored recommendations and placements tied to live query intent. The design challenge is to make the commercial content relevant to the task while preserving the usefulness of the application.

Making usage and revenue grow together

In its announcement, Koah reported processing more than 170 million queries and 35 million native ad impressions over the preceding year. Customers included Liner, Viro, and Sup AI. Those deployments provide a testing ground for the central question: can monetization improve without weakening the experience people came for?

As Tom wrote about the investment, native advertising can help offset the cost of inference. We believe that matters particularly for applications serving a broad audience. A developer should be able to improve the product and welcome more usage without relying exclusively on converting every user to a paid subscription.

Infrastructure for the next generation of applications

Koah’s roadmap includes deeper intent modeling, new conversational ad formats, self-serve tools, and broader distribution across AI applications. These are connected problems: developers need straightforward integration, advertisers need relevant reach, and users need an experience that remains worthy of their trust.

Co-founders Nic Baird, Mike Choi, and Herrick Fang came through South Park Commons as Founder Fellows, with overlapping experience at Affirm, Supermove, and Qualified. They are building at the intersection of product design, advertising, and AI infrastructure.

We believe the monetization layer will be an important part of making AI applications broadly accessible. We’re thrilled to partner with Nic, Mike, Herrick, and the Koah team as they build it.
