From Logistics Agents to Operations Infrastructure: BackOps' Series B

Six months ago, we announced our Series A investment in BackOps, an AI infrastructure and automation platform for back-office logistics work.

Logistics teams have been stuck in the pre-API age for decades. Because each company deals with hundreds or thousands of different vendors, carriers, and warehouse operators, it has never been possible to integrate their systems, let alone automate the work that runs across them. BackOps changed that, with AI agents that read documents, operate legacy software, and make phone calls just like a human.

But what was always most exciting to us was not just automating painful manual workflows. It was using that automation, and the resulting data, as a foundation for running more sophisticated, proactive operations. Today, BackOps is doing that for some of the largest companies in the country, from grocery to manufacturing to logistics.

We're thrilled to congratulate the team and participate in their $42m Series B led by Insight Partners. Here are some learnings from the first few quarters of partnering together that make us particularly excited for the future of the company.

Solving (and Preventing) Problems with Agent Scale

The workflows BackOps automates have always been costly and manual, but their primary benefit has never been labor replacement. It's moving the core business metrics that really matter for an operations team.

From more than two million workflows run in production, BackOps typically sees a 76% reduction in the time to resolve an incident, and has helped its customers capture $72 million in claims that would otherwise have slipped through the cracks.

Even better than solving problems more effectively is preventing them from happening in the first place. As BackOps gathers data on thousands of carriers and logistics companies, it can help customers make smarter decisions: which partners to ship with (and which to avoid), how to structure a claim to get it approved, or how to change operations to deliver more reliably.

Moving From Workflow Automation to Strategic Platform

This expansion from execution to strategy shows up in how executives think about these platforms. They aren't shopping for a tool to automate claims or carrier selection. They want a foundational platform to build and orchestrate all of the AI systems that will run a future operations organization.

Customers increasingly view BackOps not as an agentic automation provider, but as core infrastructure and a developer platform for real-world logistics tasks. With BackOps, companies can build real-world workflows faster, more cheaply, and more reliably, while benefiting from the data BackOps gathers by tracking millions of shipments across the country's logistics providers.

I interviewed BackOps CEO Sean McCarthy on why he started the company, the power of AI in logistics, and how the product has evolved from agents to infrastructure.
